From Baseball to Table Tennis
Baseball
Did you know- Baseball remains popular in several Dominican cities, including Santo Domingo, La Vega, San Francisco de Macoris, and Santiago de los Caballeros. This Spanish-speaking country is home to many famous baseball players: Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Juan Marichal, Felipe Alou, and Pedro Borbón, among others. On the other hand, the Caribbean Island has won a host of international trophies and medals. Certainly, its greatest triumph came at the 1948 World Cup in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, where the national team placed first. By 1982 the nation made history when it beat Cuba, host country, and won the gold medal at the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games in Havana. Despite that achievement, the Island did not win the World Cup in Seoul, South Korea. By 1969 the country hosted the Baseball World Championship. In the first half of the 20th century, America introduced baseball into the Dominican Republic.
Boxing
Did you know- In the Caribbean Boxing Tournament in Managua (Nicaragua) in the mid-1970s, the Dominican team finished second in the medal count, with 8 medals ( 1 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze), ahead of Nicaragua, Mexico, and Colombia.
Central American and Caribbean Games
Did you know- The Central American and Caribbean Games were held in the Island (Santiago de los Caballeros) in 1986. These Games also took place in the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo) in 1974, with 4,500 athletes from 22 nations and dependencies.
Félix Sánchez
Did you know- American-born Dominican athlete Félix Sánchez is a renowned Olympic gold medalist. Sánchez won the gold medal in the men's 400m hurdles at the 2004 Summer Games in Greece; the first Olympic title in the history of Dominican sport. He was born on August 30, 1977, New York City, United States.
Host Country
Did you know- Santo Domingo, the country's capital, with a well-developed infrastructure, was home to the Pan American Games in 2003, which was dominated by the United States.
Mary Joe Fernández
Did you know- America's former tennis player Mary Joe Fernández was born in the Dominican Republic. She, whose original name is Maria José Fernández, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (Barcelona'92 & Atlanta'96).
Pan American Games
Did you know- The Dominican Republic did not participate in the Pan American Games in 1963 (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and 1967 ( Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada).
Summer Olympics
Did you know- By 1968, a team of 19 athletes fly to Mexico City for the Island's second attendance of the Olympic Games. The Dominican Republic began its participation in the Olympics in 1964 in Tokyo (Japan).
Weightlifting
Did you know- In the Pan American Weightlifting Tournament in the United Mexican States in 1974, the team of the Dominican Republic won six bronze medals and took seventh place in unofficial team championships.
